The short answer

What keeps a block retaining wall from leaning or failing?

Three things: a compacted base under the first course, drainage behind the blocks, and the right setback as the wall goes up. Water trapped behind a wall pushes on it after every storm, so gravel backfill and a drain pipe that lets that water out are as important as the blocks you see.
  • Compacted, leveled base course
  • Gravel backfill and drain pipe behind the wall
  • Walls for slopes, patios and garden beds
  • Caps, steps and seat walls

The work

Retaining Walls, done the right way

Central Florida is mostly flat, but plenty of yards still have a slope: a lot that drops toward a lake or retention pond, a raised back patio, or a side yard where sand keeps washing onto the walkway every rainy season.

A retaining wall holds that soil in place and turns a slope into usable, level ground. We build segmental block walls on a compacted base with drainage behind them, often as part of a paver patio or pool deck, so the wall and the hardscape are planned as one job.

  • Excavation and baseTrench dug and a compacted base laid so the first course sits level and solid.
  • Drainage behind the wallGravel backfill and a drain pipe so water behind the blocks has a way out.
  • Block courses and capsBlocks set with the proper setback and finished with caps for a clean top line.
  • Seat walls and stepsLow seat walls around patios and fire pits, and steps where the grade changes.
  • Tied into the hardscapeWalls planned with the patio, pool deck or walkway they support.

Built for Florida

Sand, sun and summer storms decide how long pavers last. We build for all three.

FAQ

Retaining Walls questions

Rain soaks into the soil behind the wall and pushes on it. Without gravel backfill and a drain pipe, that pressure builds after every storm and the wall can bulge or lean. Drainage is part of every wall we build.
It depends on the height of the wall and your city or county. Taller walls usually need a permit and sometimes an engineer. We tell you at the estimate what applies to your project, and HOA approval is often needed too.
Yes. Many of our walls are built with a raised patio or a fire pit area, so the wall, steps and pavers are designed and installed together.
Our installation work comes with a 2-year warranty. We go over what it covers when we give you the estimate.
